Shazma Arshad

Shazma Arshad is Pakistan based painter whose work centres on humanising the feminine, presenting women not as idealised figures but as real, complex, individuals. She draws inspiration from her own experiences of growing up in a conservative environment, where femininity was often shaped by expectations rather than the lived experience. By creating a series of paintings integrated with fabrics she aims to bring forward the raw, lived realities of an ordinary woman. Religious visual culture appears as a secondary tool in Shazma's work, allowing her to present myself, an otherwise ordinary woman through a visual language usually granted only to sacred or elevated bodies. By using such imagery, she moves the emphasis from sacred figures to ordinary feminine bodies, encouraging viewers to recognise the everyday woman as worthy of visibility.
